Valles Caldera National Preserve.
Before turning on the route to the park we stopped for a train. The sign says "Please do not stop in the box". As you can see the box is where the gate comes down.
Driving down the El Camino Real (The real way) Historic Trail.

Oh yeah, just after this sign.
We encountered two young Elk. One obliged us with a picture.

Entering the Park.
This picture was taken just after the sign. No kidding. Hey that reminds me of a joke. Tour guide, please do not tell it again. A horse walks into ...... Tour guide, please stop.
Look close you will see a prairie dog peaking out of his hole. They were everywhere.

Visitor's Center.
Mrs. Tour guide stamping.

Herd of Elk.
The lost cabin.
Heading down from the visitor's center, elevation 8000 ft.

TTFN:
PS:
Valles Caldera (or Jemez Caldera) is a 13.7 mile wide volcanic caldera in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico. Hot springs, streams, fumaroles, natural gas seeps and volcanic domes dot the caldera floor landscape. The highest point in the caldera is Redondo Peak, an 11,253-foot resurgent lava dome located entirely within the caldera. Also within the caldera are several grass valleys the largest is Valle Grande, the only one accessible by a paved road. Much of the caldera is within the Valley Caldera National Preserve, a unit of the National Park System.
Volcanic Dome.
A Caldera is a large volcanic crater, typically one formed by a major eruption leading to the collapse of the mouth of the volcano.
