Wigwam Motel #7-San Bernardino California

As promised we have returned to the Wigwam Motel chain on Route 66.

The Wigwam Motels are also known as the Wigwam Villages. The chain was built during the 1930's and 1940's. There were 7 different locations.

Village # 1 in Horse Cave, Kentucky, was built in 1933, and closed in 1935.

Village # 2 in Cave City Kentucky is close to Mammoth Cave National Park and still in operation.

Village # 3 New Orleans Louisiana went out of business in 1954.

Village # 4 Orlando Florida went out of business in 1974.

Village # 5 Bessemer Alabama went out of business in 1964.

Village #6 Holbrook Arizona closed in 1974 when I-40 bypassed downtown Holbrook. It was reopened in 1988.

Village #7 San Bernardino California built in 1947, was not part of the chain. Since 2012, it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

  1. The bathroom in the WigWam Motel reminds me of Uncle Stan's comment about the bathrooms in the A-Frame motel (Laskey's) on Deep Creek Lake: "To use it, you have to back in or have been born there."
