Day 57 - Another new State - Iowa

Hey KW, yes tour guide, what is it?  Why is CJ on the other side of the bed? Well tour guide, did you watch the Monday Night Football Game?  No, I don't care for football. Baseball is my sport. Well the Steelers beat the Redskins 38-16. Stomped them bad. She is not too happy right now.  

 

Passing under the Great Platte River Road Archway on I 80 east heading to Council Bluffs Iowa. 

 

First stop is the Homestead National Monument of America in Beatrice Nebraska. 

 

Time for Mrs tour guide to stamp her books.

The Homestead Act Quilt was donated to the park for dedication of the Heritage Center. 

 

  

This is South Dakota and Nebraska. The square cut out on each shows the amount of homestead land was given out by the Government.

The Homestead Act of 1862 offered people 160 acres of free land - if they were willing to live on it, farm it, and build a home. There were 30 Homesteading States in which the government gave away 270 million acres.
